Definition
Ordinary Portland cement is a hydraulic cementitious material made by finely grinding cement clinker, 5%-20% of blended materials, and an appropriate amount of gypsum. It has the characteristics of high strength, high heat of hydration, good frost resistance, low shrinkage, good wear resistance, good carbonation resistance, poor corrosion resistance, and poor high-temperature resistance.
Application Range
Cement is especially suitable for manufacturing concrete, precast concrete, fair-faced concrete, GRC products, adhesives, etc., and is widely used in colored pavement bricks, permeable bricks, cultural stones, sculptures, terrazzo, wear-resistant floors, putty, etc. It has high light reflection performance, making curbs, road signs, and center dividers safer.
Cement Characteristics
1. High Strength
Ordinary Portland cement has a fast hydration reaction rate, and both its early and late strength are high. It can be used for cast-in-place concrete floors, beams, columns, and precast concrete components. It can also be used for prestressed concrete structures and high-strength concrete projects.
2. High Heat of Hydration, Good Frost Resistance
Due to the fast hydration reaction rate of ordinary Portland cement and the high content of tricalcium silicate and dicalcium silicate, the heat of hydration is relatively large, which is beneficial for winter construction. However, due to the large heat of hydration, when constructing large-volume concrete projects (generally referring to projects with lengths, widths, and heights exceeding 1m, where a large amount of heat is easily accumulated inside the concrete components, causing a temperature difference between the inside and outside, resulting in damage to the concrete), it is not suitable for large-volume concrete projects. Ordinary Portland cement has a dense structure and good frost resistance. It is suitable for projects in cold regions that are subjected to repeated freezing and thawing, and projects with high frost resistance requirements, such as the overflow surface of dams and concrete pavement projects.
3. Low Shrinkage, Good Wear Resistance
Ordinary Portland cement has low shrinkage during hardening and is not prone to shrinkage cracks. It can be used in dry environment projects. Due to its low shrinkage, the surface is not easily powdered, so it has good wear resistance and can be used in road projects.
4. Good Carbonation Resistance
After hydration, the cement stone in ordinary Portland cement contains a large amount of calcium hydroxide. When carbonated, the alkalinity of the cement decreases slightly, and the protective effect on the steel bars is strong. It can be used in environments with high carbon dioxide concentration in the air, such as heat treatment workshops.
5. Poor Corrosion Resistance
After hydration, ordinary Portland cement contains a large amount of calcium hydroxide and hydrated calcium aluminate, so its resistance to soft water and chemical corrosion is poor, and it cannot be used in harbor projects or sulfate-resistant projects.
6. Poor High-Temperature Resistance
When cement stone is at a temperature above 250-300 degrees Celsius, the calcium silicate hydrate in the cement stone begins to dehydrate, and calcium hydroxide decomposes into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide above 600 degrees Celsius. When the high-temperature cement stone is damp, the generated calcium oxide reacts with water, causing volume expansion and damage to the cement stone. Therefore, ordinary Portland cement is not suitable for concrete engineering at temperatures above 250 degrees Celsius, such as industrial kilns and high-temperature furnace foundations.
